Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr shareholder Rick Kopf (pictured in photo on left) says he had just three goals the weekend of March 25, when he participated in a Colorado endurance event called the Elk Mountains Grand Traverse. “The first goal was to survive, the second was not to get hurt and the third was to finish,” says Kopf of Dallas. “And we accomplished the three goals.” Rick Kopf and his brother, Chris Kopf (pictured together, from left, in photo on right) began the cross-country ski race at midnight Friday, March 25, in Crested Butte and finished 15 hours and four minutes later at a little after 3 p.m. Saturday, March 26 in Aspen.
“It was a very difficult thing both from a physical and from a mental standpoint,” he says. “How far is 40 miles? What does that really mean in the back country?” He recalls standing on top of a mountain and looking at a map that indicated that he and his brother only had 15 miles to go but thinking it was impossible to know how much energy and time they needed to ski those 15 miles in mountainous backcountry.
