Without debate yesterday, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously endorsed two Southern District Court nominees: J. Paul Oetken, a senior vice president and associate general counsel at Cablevision Systems Corp., and Paul Engelmayer, head of the New York office of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. Both men were nominated by the White House earlier this year. If they are confirmed by the full Senate, there would still be seven vacancies on the Southern District bench.

Also yesterday, the committee gave its approval to legislation that would allow federal judges to open up their courtrooms to radio and TV coverage. A similar bill won committee approval last year before dying in the full Senate. — David Ingram
