The nation has a new largest minority-owned law firm. Milwaukee-based Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan can officially lay claim to that mantle after the demise last month of Yoss, formerly Adorno & Yoss. And now Gonzalez Saggio has announced the opening of a new office in Boston with the hire of five former Adorno & Yoss lawyers. The new hires include Boston office partner-in-charge Ferdinand “Fred” Alvaro Jr., and partners Judith Melideo-Preble, Kenneth Whittaker and William Parker. John Molloy Jr., joins Gonzalez Saggio as of counsel. The group, which represents the bulk of Adorno & Yoss’ old Boston office, gives 80-lawyer Gonzalez Saggio 18 offices across the country.

Adorno & Yoss was once considered the nation’s largest minority-owned firm, but that was before former name partner Henry “Hank” Adorno had his law license suspended last year, forcing the firm to rebrand itself as Yoss LLP. After several months of mounting financial difficulties and partner defections—Yoss LLP owed $8 million to Wells Fargo, according to affiliate publication the Daily Business Review—the firm finally dissolved in mid-March. At the time, Yoss LLP had about 124 remaining lawyers. Many have begun the process of finding new homes.
