Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey K. Oing (See Profile) has been assigned to the Commercial Division to take over former judicial hearing officer Ira Gammerman’s heavy caseload. Mr. Gammerman stopped working as a JHO on April 1, when funding for the program was suspended as part of a $170 million cut to the court system’s budget. Mr. Gammerman’s departure raised concerns among attorneys practicing in the Commercial Division that the remaining judges would not be able to handle all of his cases without significant delays. As of March, Mr. Gammerman accounted for 10 percent to 15 percent of the division’s total caseload (NYLJ, March 16).

Justice Oing, who was elected in 2004 to Manhattan Civil Court, was elected to Supreme Court in November. In addition to taking on Mr. Gammerman’s cases, he will continue to preside over his previous inventory of general civil cases. In 2009, he was named supervising judge of the Civil Court and as an acting Supreme Court justice. — Brendan Pierson
