A Washington, D.C., native who worked for the Federal Defenders of New York Inc. for six years before leaving for academia is returning as the organization’s first new executive director and attorney-in-chief in two decades.

In July, David E. Patton, 40, will succeed Leonard Joy in overseeing roughly 40 lawyers in the Southern and Eastern districts. John J. Byrnes has served as interim director since Mr. Joy’s retirement.
