Among the 10 employees at the Appellate Division, First Department, notified last week that they will be laid off were the former wife of Presiding Justice Luis A. Gonzalez, the son of his driver and First Department Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels’ niece, according to courthouse sources. The three were among 44 workers hired by the First Department in the month following the departure last Nov. 23 of 46 employees who opted to take early retirement.

Justice Gonzalez’s ex-wife, Vivian Gonzalez, had been hired last December as an associate clerk working with the First Department’s disciplinary committee at a salary of about $65,000, according to the sources. Similarly, they said, his driver’s son, Mark Estrada, had been hired in December at a salary of approximately $40,000 as a court clerk. Likewise, Justice Manzanet-Daniels’ niece was hired as a senior court analyst at a salary of about $58,000 at the end of November and worked in Justice Gonzalez’ chambers. Several weeks ago, they said, she was moved to the Committee on Character and Fitness.
