This article considers a recent decision from the Supreme Court of California that explores the scope and meaning of the duties that lawyers owe to former clients. The case, Oasis West Realty LLC v. Goldman, 51 Cal. 4th 811 (2011), has generated an extensive debate around the country because of its potentially broad implications for attorney-client relationships generally.

The facts of the case are simply summarized. Kenneth Goldman, while a partner at a national law firm, had represented Oasis West Realty in a zoning proceeding in Beverley Hills, Calif., the objective of which was to obtain the necessary permits to build a commercial development. About two years after termination of the attorney-client relationship, Goldman, as a private citizen, took actions to publicly oppose the same project.
