Attorneys for Dish Network Corp. and The Walt Disney Co. traded opening arguments yesterday in a lawsuit over television licensing, in which the satellite TV provider argues that a series of contracts it entered into with Disney in 2005 gave it the rights to four high-definition channels, a claim the media conglomerate rejects.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey K. Oing (See Profile) is presiding over the lawsuit, Echostar Satellite LLC v. ESPN Inc., 600282/08, which is reaching trial more than three years after its filing in early 2008. Dish Network, a cable service provider that was spun off from cable satellite operator Echostar, alleges that Disney violated three licensing agreements when, in 2007, it demanded compensation from Dish in exchange for the rights to four new high-definition channels.
