Cigna will acquire rival HealthSpring in a $3.8 billion deal that will expand the health care company’s senior and Medicare client base.

HealthSpring shareholders will received $55 per share in cash, a 37 percent premium over HealthSpring’s Oct. 21 closing price. The deal, which has been approved by both companies’ boards of directors, is expected to close during the first half of next year.
