A leaked internal memo has revealed that Herbert Smith intends to reopen its New York office within the next 12 months, according to Legal Week, an affiliate publication in the United Kingdom. Though Herbert Smith pulled out of Manhattan in the 1990s, senior partner Jonathan Scott told staff in the memo that the top 10 UK firm will launch a new New York City office focused on dispute resolution, including international arbitration and investigations.

Managing partner David Willis told Legal Week that firm leaders had decided it was time to adopt a new approach. “The strategy we’ve pursued in the U.S., which has worked reasonably well in certain ways, has been not to have our own practice in New York,” Mr. Willis said. “We have some really good relationships with U.S. firms and having examined the successes of our competitors going into New York, we’ve noticed they have generally only managed to make a go of things in certain niche areas and have had a number of false starts. We do now think it is time for Herbert Smith to adopt a new approach and to open in New York—but in a very focussed way.”
