On Sept. 23, 2011 a symposium on the Prudent Investor Act, EPTL 11-2.3, (PIA) was held at Columbia University and sponsored by the Columbia Law School and the NYSBA Trusts and Estates Section. The symposium was conceived and chaired by Marilyn Ordover and Charles Scott, two of the most highly respected trusts and estates lawyers of the last half century.

The impetus for the symposium were the cataclysmic losses in equities values beginning in 2008, realized and unrealized. The primary question was: Did the standards, requirements and authorizations under the PIA contribute to these losses? The principal purpose of the symposium was to consider how trustees should invest going forward. The presenters were accomplished law professors, and respected economists, investors and investment advisers.
