The Columbia Law School Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic helped draft a law, recently passed by the Key West City Commission in Florida, that requires contractors who wish to enter the city’s competitive bid process to offer employees with domestic partners the same benefits as married employees.
The ordinance, the third of its kind in Florida, applies to companies who are vying for Key West city contracts worth $20,000 or more. The clinic helped draft a similar law for Florida’s Broward County, which was adopted last November. Equal benefits laws have also been approved in Miami Beach, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Olympia, Seattle and the state of California.
