A Queens judge who released a troubled teen to a community-based program, only to see him indicted in a hate crime murder, has blasted New York City’s Probation Department for foregoing multiple opportunities to rein in the wayward youth, even though he released the boy despite the recommendations of the agency.

Family Court Judge John Hunt (See Profile) said the Department of Probation repeatedly violated its own policies and seemingly ignored Luis Tabales’ continuing transgressions, at least in part because the youth was enrolled in a “state-of-the-art” juvenile program, and it was apparently unclear who would take responsibility for monitoring the teen and deciding if and when to violate the probationer.
