The Appellate Division, First Department, has agreed to hear arguments over whether a $2 million bond is unreasonable for a woman accused of running a Manhattan prostitution ring. Two judges of the Manhattan Supreme Court declined to reduce Anna Gristina’s bail, rejecting her lawyers’ argument that the amount is inappropriate and unconstitutional for a single charge of promoting prostitution. On May 7, the First Department said it would hear oral arguments on the appeal on June 7.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has argued that Gristina is a flight risk, given that she already “fled” to Montreal amid a 2008 probe that led to Governor Eliot Spitzer’s resignation. The district attorney’s response to the appeal brief is due May 23.
