Patrick Fitzgerald, a tenacious prosecutor who learned his trade going up against mobsters and terrorists at the Southern District U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan is stepping down as U.S. attorney in Chicago, effective June 30.

Fitzgerald, 51, the longest-serving U.S. attorney in Chicago’s history, announced his plans on May 23 to leave the top slot in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.
