At least eight judges are apparently in the running for presiding justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department, as a screening panel has forwarded to Governor Andrew Cuomo the names of judges it found “highly qualified” to succeed A. Gail Prudenti as leader of the Brooklyn appeals court.
Several sources close to the process said the screening panel has advanced Acting Presiding Justice William Mastro of the Second Department (See Profile) and five of his colleagues: Leonard Austin (See Profile), Cheryl Chambers (See Profile), Randall Eng (See Profile), Robert Miller (See Profile) and Peter Skelos (See Profile). In addition, at least two First Department justices, Angela Mazzarelli (See Profile) and David Friedman (See Profile), were recommended, sources said.
