Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman has announced the latest round of public hearings on funding civil legal services for the poor (See Notice). The hearings, one each in the four Appellate Division departments, will be the third in a series he has promised to conduct annually in advance of formulating the judiciary’s budget. The budget for the current fiscal year, which began on April 1, allotted $25 million in funding for civil legal services programs, twice as much as the previous fiscal year.

The upcoming hearings are on Sept. 27, Court of Appeals, 20 Eagle St., Albany; Oct. 1, Appellate Division, First Department, 27 Madison Ave., Manhattan; Oct. 2, Onondaga County Courthouse, 401 Montgomery St., Syracuse; and Oct. 4 Nassau County Supreme Court, 100 Supreme Court Dr., Mineola. They will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., except for the Syracuse session, which will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oral testimony will be by invitation only. Those interested in delivering remarks limited to 10 minutes in length should contact the judiciary at [email protected] no later than 14 days before the hearing.
