A federal judge has awarded a plaintiff more than $252,000 in legal fees in a protracted battle with the state over her allegations that she encountered a hostile work environment in four state prisons where she was a corrections officer.

Northern District Judge Glenn Suddaby (See Profile) rejected the reasoning of attorneys for the state that since a jury only returned a favorable verdict for plaintiff Penny Collins in one of eight claims, her attorney, Mairead Connor, should receive only one-eighth of the $286,176 in requested fees (See the State’s Brief).
