In a deal worth $2.2 billion, telecommunications firm Sprint Nextel will buy the approximately 50 percent stake in wireless network operator Clearwire Corp. it doesn’t already own. It will pay $2.97 per share for Clearwire.
Overland Park, Kansas-based Sprint is the country’s third-largest cellphone service provider behind Verizon Wireless and AT&T. It became the majority owner in Clearwire earlier this year when it made a $100 million investment to increase its stake in the company from 48.15 percent to 50.8 percent.
