William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach has captured the 2012-2013 New York State High School Mock Trial Tournament, concluding a months-long process during which about 300 attorneys acted as legal advisers to participating schools. The Long Island school edged a team from the Mount Academy in Esopus, Ulster County, in a match before Third Department Presiding Justice Karen Peters, one of approximately 125 sitting judges to participate in the tournament at county, regional and state levels.

Contestants took the roles of attorneys and witnesses to argue a fictional case in which a university was sued for deceptive business practices for allegedly providing a prospective student with misleading statements regarding loan practices and opportunities for transfer of credits. William Floyd acted for the university and Mount Academy for the plaintiff.
