The Vera Institute of Justice has lured a former official to serve as its next president and director. Nicholas Turner—since 2007 a managing director of the Rockefeller Foundation and before that a vice president and chief program officer at Vera—will become the institute's fifth director in August. He replaces Michael Jacobson, a sociologist who held the post for eight years (NYLJ, April 5).

Vera is an influential nonpartisan organization that analyzes criminal justice issues, creates demonstration projects and provides technical assistance in 45 states and several foreign countries, frequently in partnership with government officials. Established in 1961, it has more than two dozen separate programs, a budget of $35 million and 176 professional staff in New York, Washington, Los Angeles and New Orleans.
