A Manhattan jury on Tuesday awarded five men a total of $190 million after a joint trial in their lawsuits against two boiler companies over asbestos exposure. According to Weitz & Luxenberg, which represented the plaintiffs, the verdict is the largest asbestos verdict ever in New York (See Verdict Sheets).

The plaintiffs alleged they were exposed to asbestos when working with equipment manufactured by boiler makers Cleaver Brooks and Burnham, which the jury found acted with reckless disregard for human life. The plaintiffs' suits originally targeted a slew of other companies, but all settled before trial. The plaintiffs worked as steamfitters, plumbers and construction workers in the New York area. All developed mesothelioma, and three have died from the disease. Each individual plaintiff will receive between $20 million and $60 million. According to Weitz & Luxenberg, the $60 million awards, which went to two plaintiffs, are the largest ever given to individuals in asbestos cases in New York. The jury also awarded $10 million to two of the plaintiffs' wives for loss of consortium.
