The number of religious discrimination charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has increased dramatically in recent years. In the last 15 years, from 1997 to 2012 this number has more than doubled. This rise has been attributed to increased religious diversity in the United States, an increased willingness of employees to bring their religious practices into the workplace and employees working longer days which leads to more opportunities for conflict between religion and employment.
Lawsuits involving claims of religious discrimination can be expensive, time-consuming and stressful for employers and employees alike. An effective alternative means of addressing claims of religious discrimination in the workplace is through mediation. Mediation is a particularly effective tool for dealing with situations involving religious accommodation in the workplace, since these cases often result from misunderstandings and miscommunications and are best addressed with creative solutions.
