In November 2009 New York state passed the Child Passenger Protection Act (Leandra's Law), which made it a felony to commit the crime of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated when having a passenger in the vehicle 15 years of age or younger.
An important part of Leandra's Law took effect nine months later when New York became the 10th state in the nation to require all persons convicted of a first DWI misdemeanor to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle.
