Joseph Goldstein, who spent 20 years on the bench in Nassau County, died Thursday after several weeks of illness. He was 83.

He began his law career in 1956 working as an attorney for a small firm in Hicksville, then dedicated the next few decades to public service. Beginning in 1963, Goldstein worked as chief law assistant to the Board of Judges of Nassau County Court. In 1972 he began serving as chief clerk of County Court.
