The Appellate Division was created because, in the late 19th century, the patchwork system of the New York state courts was inefficient and inadequate to meet the needs of the public and legal community.

Congratulations to the New York Law Journal on its 125th Anniversary. The Appellate Division, First Department, is slightly younger than the Law Journal, but the newspaper’s anniversary provides a welcome opportunity to track the court’s evolution from its beginning in 1894 and to reflect on its relationship with the Law Journal.
