Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has joined an amicus brief in which a coalition of states are urging the U.S. Supreme Court to find that firearm “straw purchases” violate federal law regardless of whether the buyer is legally eligible to purchase a gun.

The brief was filed Dec. 30 in Abramski v. United States, 12-1493, a case scheduled for argument Jan. 22. It centers on a man, Bruce Abramski, who bought a 9mm Glock handgun for his uncle from a licensed dealer. Abramski apparently offered to purchase the gun because he could get a discount as a former Virginia police officer. On a form, Abramski checked a box stating that he was not buying the gun on behalf of someone else.
