A judge in Albany has frozen a state prison inmate’s $227,000 inheritance, pending a determination on what, if anything, he owes to victims.

Supreme Court Justice Joseph Teresi (See Profile) granted a motion by the state Office of Victim Services to enjoin distribution of the estate, finding that the agency has established likelihood that one or more of Robert Mims’ victims could be entitled to damages. However, Teresi left open the possibility that Mims could use a portion of his inheritance to hire an attorney.
