Bar patrons beaten by off-duty firefighters have convinced a Brooklyn appellate court to revive negligent hiring and retention claims against the city.

In a suit connected to a melee over a spilled drink, a unanimous panel of the Appellate Division, Second Department on Wednesday modified a lower court’s summary judgment ruling to let claims of negligent hiring, supervision, training and retention proceed.
