Eric Holder Jr. on Thursday said he will resign from the U.S. Department of Justice, where he has served since 2009 as the country’s first black attorney general.

President Barack Obama, who formally announced the resignation at the White House, called Holder’s departure “bittersweet.” He praised Holder’s decades-long career in public service and his efforts in prosecuting counterterrorism, fighting for civil rights and battling public corruption and white-collar crime.
