Being the president of the Erie County Bar Association wasn’t enough to get Maryann Saccomando Freedman past the front door of The Buffalo Club, the most exclusive, all-male private club in the city.

Freedman had been invited to a legal reception there in 1982, during her first year as president of the 3,500 lawyer bar group. But she didn’t exactly get a warm welcome.
