To qualify for Medicaid benefits an applicant must prove financial need. A part of that financial assessment is a review of monthly income such as Social Security, pension, or required minimum distributions from retirement plans. Medicaid determines how much income an applicant may keep and how much (if any) must be turned over to Medicaid.

There are separate and distinct Medicaid rules for those seeking care at home instead of care in a nursing home. In addition, there are separate and distinct rules for married applicants as opposed to unmarried applicants.
