The Appellate Division, First Department, has affirmed a lower court’s ruling reducing a $200,000 jury verdict to zero in an auto accident case on grounds that the jury ignored instructions to stop deliberating if it concluded the defendant’s negligence was not a “substantial factor” in causing the accident.

The unanimous ruling in Alcantara v. Knight, 105585/07, upheld Manhattan Supreme Court Acting Justice Margaret Chan’s decision, which came after a five-day trial.
