Technology has, like never before, given employers a window into the personal lives of employees and applicants. Employers have long dealt with employees who routinely use “their” employer-provided email, voicemail, and smart phones for personal purposes, reducing productivity and exposing their personal lives to employer monitoring.
Now, more and more, social media is used as a public forum to expose life’s every detail, from meal choices to opinions about employers and personal antics, which can create significant dilemmas for employers. Employees are exposing themselves to risk of termination1 and sometimes prosecution,2 while employers attempt to protect good will and work culture, asking, “How could they be so reckless?”
