A federal judge has found that the city of Buffalo has fulfilled a goal that his court established in 1989 for attracting minority candidates to the city fire department.

Western District Judge John Curtin said the results of the 2013 firefighters exam showed that sufficient progress has been made toward boosting the minority applicant pool. According to Curtin’s ruling in USA v. City of Buffalo, 74-cv-195, 40 percent of all applicants who took the firefighter exam in 2013 were black, 8 percent were Hispanic and 15 percent were women.
