Charles A. Bennett, a former corporate lawyer in New York who once practiced at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, is set to plead guilty next week to criminal charges that he stole $5 million from investors in a long-running Ponzi scheme.
Bennett’s alleged fraud came to light when he nearly died in a suicide attempt last November. After leaving a 16-page suicide note in a Manhattan hotel room admitting that he duped close friends and family members into making bogus investments, Bennett jumped from a pier into the Hudson River. He was rescued by police divers but suffered severe damage to his lungs.
