New post-divorce maintenance guidelines that took effect this week provide predictable factors for award calculations, but they still leave room for matrimonial lawyers to advocate on behalf of their clients, one of the rules’ framers said Thursday.

Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Sunshine told members of the New York State Bar Association’s Family Law Section that the new maintenance rules were a compromise and, as such, leave plenty of discretion for judges to act and for lawyers to protect clients’ interests.
