A Brooklyn appellate court said a judge must review an internal police report on a woman’s death before deciding if the report can be disclosed.
The Appellate Division, Second Department, said Nassau County Supreme Court Justice R. Bruce Cozzens Jr. should have examined the 700-page Internal Affairs Unit report on the circumstances surrounding Leonardo Valdez-Cruz’s fatal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend, Jo’Anna Bird, before denying Newsday access.
