A Manhattan federal judge on Tuesday told lawyers for plaintiffs and General Motors that he is plowing ahead with plans for bellwether trials to determine issues of liability and damages in the litigation over defective ignition switches.

Looking ahead to the second of the six scheduled trials, set to begin in March, Southern District Judge Jesse Furman said there were flaws in the system but there is not, at present, a better way to proceed.
