After jurors found two men guilty of plotting to bilk a victim in a currency alteration scam, a federal judge undid the verdict, saying neither the facts nor the underlying statute were the basis for a conviction.
Eastern District Judge Roslynn Mauskopf granted motions for judgment of acquittal, brushing aside prosecution arguments that any application of liquid or powder to money in Amos Harris and Runey Mah’s scheme would be an alteration within the meaning of the crime of conspiring to alter U.S. currency with the intent to defraud.
