A man wrongly arrested and detained for years by immigration authorities has been awarded damages by a federal judge who criticized the government and lamented the lack of legal support for jailed people facing deportation.
Eastern District Judge Jack Weinstein said legal representation for Davino Watson, held for three years on the mistaken assumption he was not a U.S. citizen, would have made all the difference in confronting the repeated negligence of immigration authorities who put him behind bars and kept him there.
