The New York State Bar Association is urging the Legislature to pass a bill to begin state takeover of indigent criminal defense costs now borne by New York City and the 57 counties outside the city.

The measure, A6202/S6341, calls for the state to pick up the local governments’ share incrementally, with 25 percent phase-ins in 2016, 2017, 2018 and in 2019, when the state would assume the entire cost (NYLJ, Jan. 26).
