Majority Democrats in the Assembly are proposing that state lawmakers be allowed to earn incomes in addition to their legislative salaries at a rate tied to a percentage of what state Supreme Court justices make.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, D-Bronx, proposed letting legislators earn 40 percent of the $174,000 that Supreme Court justice are now paid on top of the legislative base salary of $79,500. That would be an extra $69,600, or a maximum of $149,100, per year.
