Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson said he will not ask for prison time when Peter Liang is sentenced April 14 on his closely watched manslaughter conviction.

In a statement Wednesday, Thompson said the rookie police officer’s firing of a single bullet—which ricocheted through a pitch-black public housing stairwell into Akai Gurley’s heart—was a reckless action that “caused an innocent man to lose his life.”
