The wife of a Syracuse University basketball coach who was fired in 2011 amid charges he sexually abused team ball boys cannot sustain her libel claim against the sports network ESPN, a magistrate judge determined while dismissing the action.
Western District Magistrate Judge David Peebles ruled ESPN’s reports alleging that ex-assistant coach Bernie Fine molested two ball boys, that his wife Laurie Fine knew about the abuse but did nothing, and that she later had a sexual relationship with one of the abused boys, were not malicious.
