A historic settlement that sets the terms for a complete overhaul of solitary confinement in New York’s 54 state prisons was approved by a federal judge on Thursday.
Southern District Judge Shira Scheindlin accepted the deal reached in December between inmates’ lawyers and the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) that will sharply reduce the number of prisoners in solitary confinement and work on changing harsh conditions.
