Court of Appeals Judge Michael Garcia was sworn in ceremonially in Albany on Monday by Chief Judge Janet DiFiore. Garcia, 54, who is Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s sixth selection to the Court of Appeals since taking office in 2011, has been adjudicating cases since the Senate confirmed him on Feb. 8.

During remarks at Monday’s ceremony, Garcia spoke of his two-year clerkship with the late Judge Judith Kaye after graduating from Albany Law School in 1990 and how it instilled in him a deep respect for the court. He said he hoped to use “something of the wisdom and the courage” of those who came before him to help him perform his duties on the state’s highest court.
