New York City Human Resources Administration commissioner Steven Banks was one of seven speakers at the New York City Bar Association Monday evening discussing the impact of expanding civil legal services for low-income New Yorkers.
Banks, a former attorney-in-chief of the Legal Aid Society, noted that the city has increased funding for such services from about $6 million in 2014 to more than $60 million in the fiscal year beginning July 1. He said state court officials also have committed to using a portion of the judiciary’s budget to support civil legal services.
