Burton Joseph, a retired state Supreme Court justice from Nassau County who was known for his charitable contributions, has died. He was 87.

Joseph, a lifelong Nassau County resident, obtained his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School and was admitted to practice in 1957. He spent the first years of his legal career in private practice and, from 1971 to 1976, worked as an attorney for the Nassau County government. He became a district judge in Nassau County in 1977.
