A Brooklyn appeals court has ruled that a $16 million verdict for a woman who was seriously injured by falling down the stairs at a subway station be reduced to $5 million.

On Dec. 12, 2008, Maria Alcantara fell down the stairs at the Graham Avenue stop on the L line in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and allegedly suffered a comminuted left acetabular fracture, traumatic brain injury, and post-traumatic seizure disorder from the fall. She argued that the fall was caused by a defective concrete landing at the top of the stairs.
